For a musician, George Gershwin (1898 – 1937) did not have an auspicious start in life. He did not come from a musical family (his parents were Russian immigrants, both from St Petersburg, who had married after arriving in New York). It wasn’t until George was 12 years old that the Gershwin household acquired a piano, but only 3 years after this young George was earning his living playing the piano and writing songs. The piano remained the centre of George’s life, and he never tired of performing, whether to an audience of one or thousands. According to a friend, Rouben Mamoulian (first director of Porgy & Bess): “George loved playing the piano for people and would do so at the slightest provocation... I am sure that most of his friends, in thinking of George at his best, think of him at the piano. I’ve heard many pianists and composers play for informal gatherings, but I know of no one who did it with such genuine delight and verve. George at the piano was George happy.
